Welcome to the final chapter of our Adventures by Disney Canadian Rockies series — a journey that began in charming Calgary, wandered through magical Banff, and now takes us deeper into the majestic heart of the Rockies. This stretch — from Lake Louise to Moraine Lake, and even a glacier expedition along the Columbia Icefield — was the most visually dramatic and emotionally layered leg of the trip.

If you’ve been following along, you already know this isn’t your average Canadian Rockies vacation. It’s a curated experience designed to unlock places in ways that most travelers never get to see — with Disney’s signature blend of storytelling, access, and thoughtful detail. But this final chapter brought unexpected twists — not just jaw-dropping views, but honest reflections, a few polarizing opinions, and moments that reminded us why immersive travel matters.

Let’s dive into the final stretch of our Disney Canadian Rockies tour — where bucket list destinations meet expert planning, and where Moraine Lake just might steal your heart.

We left Banff early, tracing the Icefields Parkway, often called one of the most scenic drives in the world. This route winds through glacial valleys, turquoise lakes, towering peaks, and waterfall-filled canyons, making it an unmissable part of any Adventures by Disney Canadian Rockies itinerary.

Ice Explorers + Early Access Perks

Walking on a Glacier

Stepping out onto the Athabasca Glacier was nothing short of awe-inspiring. The ice stretched in every direction, framed by snow-dusted peaks. The guides—who live onsite during the summer—were incredible. One of them shared that NASA actually uses this terrain to test equipment, since it mimics the icy moons of Saturn and Jupiter. A wild detail that made the experience feel even more like a scene from another planet.

Glacier Skywalk

The Glacier Skywalk looks intimidating but is more manageable than you’d think—and those views!

Our next stop was the Glacier Skywalk, a glass-floored observation platform suspended 918 feet above the Sunwapta Valley. While the concept might sound intimidating, the experience felt surprisingly safe and serene — more awe-inspiring than adrenaline-spiking.

The design is sleek and secure, and the moment you step onto the glass, you’re met with sweeping views that quiet any lingering hesitation. From that vantage point, you can see layers of history carved into the cliffs, winding rivers far below, and untouched forest stretching for miles. It’s not just a photo op — it’s a reminder of the scale and power of nature.

We took our time here. No rush. Just slow, grateful steps, pausing to breathe it in.

Whether you’re usually adventurous or a bit more cautious, the Glacier Skywalk offers one of the most unique ways to experience the Canadian Rockies — a moment suspended between earth and sky that’s unforgettable in the best way.

Lake Louise: A Bucket List Stop on Any Canadian Rockies Itinerary

That bucket-list moment at Lake Louise. The color is real, the air is crisp, and the glacier-fed water is colder than it looks. Even with the crowds, this view is pure magic.

After our Columbia Icefield adventure, we made our way back south toward one of the most iconic destinations in the Rockies: Lake Louise. If you’ve ever Googled Lake Louise travel guide or seen a postcard from Western Canada, chances are this vivid turquoise lake — with its mountain backdrop and famous hotel — has caught your eye.

It’s featured on nearly every Canadian Rockies itinerary, and for good reason. The scenery is otherworldly. But as we learned firsthand, the Lake Louise experience isn’t quite as serene as it looks on Instagram.

The Town of Lake Louise: Tiny, Scenic, and Mostly Functional

The “town” of Lake Louise is more of a gateway than a destination. A small plaza, a few service buildings, a gas station — that’s it. If you’re expecting a charming mountain village like Banff, this isn’t it.

There’s no walkable downtown, no hidden gems to stumble into. Nearly everyone is here for one thing: the lake.

That’s not a bad thing — but it’s important for families planning a Disney trip to Lake Louise to know that there’s not much to do outside of hiking or admiring the view.

Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise: Dream Hotel or Overhyped?

A look inside Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise: from the elegant lobby and lake-facing lounge to the mountain views and rooms that didn’t quite live up to the setting. Gorgeous in photos, but our experience left us wanting more.

The Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise is one of the most recognizable luxury hotels in Canada. It’s the kind of place that lives on people’s “someday” list. But after visiting — and hearing feedback from fellow Adventures by Disney Canadian Rockies guests — we walked away with mixed feelings.

Yes, the views are stunning. The lake-facing terraces and lobby spaces are postcard-perfect. But once you move beyond the scenic spots, the hotel experience itself left us underwhelmed.

Compared to the grandeur and warmth of the Fairmont Banff Springs, the Chateau felt more like a conference center with a view. The rooms were dated, the public areas lacked charm, and the overall ambiance felt more functional than luxurious.

Even the shops — usually a highlight for us — felt sparse. The Roots store was a bright spot, offering exclusive Lake Louise merchandise, but beyond that, it lacked the curated feel we experienced in Banff.

What We Didn’t Expect: The Crowds

Large crowd of tourists at the Lake Louise shoreline mid-morning with mountain backdrop
The Lake Louise shoreline mid-morning—beautiful, yes, but packed. Prepare for crowds.

The biggest surprise? The crowds.

Lake Louise felt like the Times Square of the Canadian Rockies. Tour buses lined up outside the hotel, the shoreline was packed shoulder-to-shoulder, and everyone — from families to influencers — was competing for the same photo.

We expected it to be busy, but the sheer volume of people made it hard to linger and enjoy the natural beauty. Even with Adventures by Disney’s seamless planning, it was impossible to avoid the congestion.

Tip: If you’re trying to decide between Lake Louise vs Moraine Lake, know this — Moraine Lake felt calmer, quieter, and more emotionally moving. We’ll get to that next.

Our Honest Take

Lake Louise is absolutely worth seeing. But if you’re dreaming of serenity and magic, the reality might fall short — especially if you’re visiting midday in peak season.

That said, Adventures by Disney made the experience as smooth as possible. We didn’t have to navigate logistics, parking, or crowds alone — and that made a huge difference. It’s the kind of place that’s best enjoyed with expert planning and realistic expectations.

Planning a Canadian Rockies trip? Let us help you decide whether to stay at Lake Louise or just visit — or explore other dreamy stops like Banff and Moraine Lake instead.

Moraine Lake: The Showstopper of Our Canadian Rockies Tour

Moraine Lake’s views are absolutely next-level—arguably the most beautiful in the Rockies.
Moraine Lake’s views are absolutely next-level—arguably the most beautiful in the Rockies.

We’d seen photos of Moraine Lake for years — the kind that almost look fake. Electric blue water. Jagged peaks. Perfect reflections. But nothing prepares you for seeing it in person.

Nestled in the Valley of the Ten Peaks, just a short drive from Lake Louise, this glacial lake felt like stepping into another world. And for many of us on the Adventures by Disney Canadian Rockies trip, this was the moment where it all clicked — the quiet, the color, the awe. It was pure magic.

Getting There Early (And Why That Matters)

Thanks to Disney’s expert planning, we arrived at Moraine Lake early, before the area was open to the general public. If you’ve done your research, you already know: private car access is no longer allowed. Most visitors have to wake up at 3 or 4 AM to catch a shuttle or risk not getting in at all.

But on this tour? We rolled right up in a private motorcoach with front-row access to the lake. No parking struggles. No middle-of-the-night alarms. Just that first light on glacier water kind of magic.

We were the only ones there for a while, and it completely changed the tone of the experience. It felt personal, sacred, almost surreal.

The Moraine Lake Experience: Beauty and Stillness

Unlike Lake Louise, Moraine Lake isn’t surrounded by hotels or shops. There’s a small gift kiosk, some park facilities, and a whole lot of nature. And that’s the point.

It felt like a true escape — the kind of place you just stand and stare for a while. The water color, caused by glacial silt, really is that blue. And in the early morning light, it shimmered like something out of a dream.

We climbed the short Rockpile Trail, which offers the most iconic view (and yes, that Instagram angle). But the hike itself was quick and family-friendly, and even the kids in our group loved scrambling up the rocks to see the lake from above.

No lines. No chaos. Just the soundtrack of birds and water and a few stunned gasps.

Worth the Detour? Absolutely.

If you’re planning a Lake Louise and Moraine Lake itinerary, don’t skip Moraine just because it’s trickier to access. This was easily one of the top highlights of the Disney Canadian Rockies tour — and one of the most emotionally resonant moments of the trip.

It’s the kind of beauty that feels impossible to describe and unforgettable once you’ve seen it.

Canoeing Lake Louise + An Elevated Picnic Lunch

Prepaid canoes for Disney guests meant no line—and plenty of time to soak in the view!

Canoeing on Lake Louise (Without the Wait)

Of all the moments we imagined for this trip, canoeing on Lake Louise was near the top of the list. It’s one of the most iconic things to do in the Canadian Rockies—and for good reason. There’s something almost cinematic about gliding across turquoise water with nothing but mountains, sky, and the silhouette of the Fairmont Chateau behind you.

What we didn’t expect? Just how seamless the experience would be thanks to Adventures by Disney.

While the public line for canoes was stretching well over an hour (and the price tag hovering near $125 CAD for 60 minutes), our experience was completely different. Disney had prepaid and pre-reserved our rentals, so we walked past the crowds straight onto the dock with zero wait. It was a perfect example of how this tour smooths out the rough edges of even the most crowded destinations.

Once we were on the water, everything else melted away. The bustle of the shoreline, the camera-clicking crowds, the pressure to “get the shot”—it all disappeared. It was just us, the steady rhythm of paddles in glacier-fed water, and a view so surreal it almost didn’t feel real.

We paused halfway out, letting the canoe drift while we looked back at the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise, perched like a postcard at the edge of the lake. That’s the moment people dream of. And despite everything—the crowds, the commercialization—it was magical.

It’s not just a bucket list photo op. It’s a perspective shift, a moment of calm, and one of the few ways to experience Lake Louise in true peace.

A Surprisingly Elevated Picnic Lunch at Lake Louise

Group of Adventures by Disney travelers enjoying a casual indoor lunch together at Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise.
Lunch with some of our favorite new tour friends at the Fairmont Lake Louise guest lounge.

Before heading to the lake for our canoe ride, we were treated to what Adventures by Disney billed as a “boxed lunch.” But let me tell you—this was no grab-and-go sandwich in a paper sack.

Instead, it felt like something you’d order at a luxury resort restaurant and enjoy in a tucked-away lounge with mountain views. Think charcuterie with artisanal cheeses, fresh fruit, crisp vegetables, hummus, crackers, and dessert—beautifully presented and surprisingly satisfying after a busy travel morning. Other options included hearty wraps, roasted vegetable grain bowls, and gourmet deli sandwiches. Something for everyone, and far better than most hotel lunch offerings.

We brought our lunches into the Fairmont Lake Louise guest lounge, where oversized armchairs and lake-facing windows made the perfect backdrop. No rush, no crowds—just a cozy, quiet hour of conversation with fellow travelers we’d come to know and love on this tour.

It was one of those in-between moments that doesn’t make it onto postcards but becomes a core memory: good food, great company, and a setting so spectacular you almost forget you’re indoors.

One thing Adventures by Disney does exceptionally well? Creating space for connection, even in the most iconic, high-traffic destinations.

Lunch wasn’t just about refueling. It was a moment to pause, reflect, and soak it all in before heading back out for more once-in-a-lifetime views.

Wrapping Up at Lake Louise: A Bittersweet Goodbye

Meeting a Mountie with Minnie and Mickey in full Canadian style!

Our final night in Lake Louise marked the end of our Adventures by Disney Canadian Rockies itinerary—and true to form, Disney made sure it ended on a high note.

What could’ve felt like a quiet wind-down instead became one of the most memorable evenings of the trip, full of reflection, connection, and just enough pixie dust to make us feel like the adventure wasn’t quite over yet.

A Farewell Dinner at the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise

That evening, our group gathered in a private ballroom at the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise for one last meal together. We had pre-selected our entrées way back on Day 1—though that moment now felt like a lifetime ago.

Like the rest of the tour, the dinner was beautifully organized, with thoughtful touches at every turn. What made it truly special, though, wasn’t the food (though it was excellent). It was the atmosphere: kids laughing across the table, adults exchanging emails and Instagram handles, new friends trading inside jokes. There was a warmth in the room that only comes from shared experiences—the kind that unfold when you travel this deeply, this intentionally, together.

The energy was somewhere between a family reunion and the last night of summer camp… and no one wanted it to end.

A Mountie With a Story to Tell

Then came the evening’s surprise: a visit from a retired Royal Canadian Mounted Police officer, in full dress uniform.

What could’ve been a quick photo op turned into something far more meaningful. He spoke with our group and shared stories from his decades of service—patrolling remote northern outposts, living among Indigenous communities, raising his family in the wilderness, and navigating a world few people ever see.

It was fascinating, heartfelt, and deeply human. And it reminded us that one of Disney’s greatest strengths—especially on these guided group adventures—is how they weave culture and storytelling into even the smallest moments. It’s not just about seeing places. It’s about understanding them.

Final Reflections on Our Canadian Rockies Adventure

Looking back, it’s hard to put into words just how much this trip meant.

We expected the scenery—towering peaks, turquoise lakes, glaciers older than time. But we didn’t expect the quiet mornings in Banff that felt like meditation. Or the joy of sipping glacial water with new friends. Or how deeply Moraine Lake would move us. Or how quickly a group of strangers could start to feel like family.

Yes, Lake Louise had its drawbacks—crowds, a slightly underwhelming hotel, a commercialized vibe that didn’t quite match the magic of Banff. But even that offered something valuable: contrast. Perspective. Gratitude.

It made us appreciate the curated quiet of Moraine Lake even more. It gave us a deeper love for Banff’s walkable charm. And it reminded us that travel isn’t just about checking destinations off a list—it’s about how a place makes you feel.

This wasn’t just a vacation. It was a reset. A reminder. A memory-maker.

And that’s what Adventures by Disney does best.
