At We Are Magic Journeys, we are dedicated to making family travel magical and memorable. A beach vacation can be the perfect primary family vacation for the summer, offering a slower pace and a chance to unwind compared to the hustle and bustle of city or theme park trips. If you’re a two-trips-a-summer kind of family, It’s also a fantastic complement to a Disney vacation, which, while loaded with fun and excitement, can also be exhausting.

This annual beach vacation is a treasured tradition, providing a great way to relax, reconnect, and focus on uninterrupted family fun. This year is particularly special for them, as it was their first time traveling with their 9-month-old twins, making them a family of six with four kids under 5! That’s a lot of vacation and beach prepping to do! Enjoy Danielle’s post below, giving you the full download on Long Beach Island, New Jersey and how to plan the perfect magical family beach day.

Our first trip to LBI as a family of 6!

Our Family Tradition at Long Beach Island

Every summer, we kick off the break with a long, relaxing vacation by the beach, staying for two weeks. With both my husband and I being teachers, we have plenty of vacation time over the summer. We travel with our extended family and rent a house just three houses away from the beach. This year, the house will play home to 16 people, including 9 (!!!) kids.

While we love to travel everywhere and travel to Walt Disney World multiple times a year, this annual beach vacation is a our favorite tradition, helping us relax, reconnect, and focus on uninterrupted family fun.

Tips for Having a Great Beach Vacation

Packing light is essential when heading to the beach with small kids, but it’s also important to ensure you have all the necessities. We typically arrive at the beach between 9-10 AM and stay until 4-5 PM so our beach-setup needs to cover all the bases. Our collapsible cooler is packed with lunch, multiple snacks (both healthy and indulgent), waters, and adult beverages. As much as we need to bring, we’re strategic and try and make things as light and easy to move as possible.

Here’s our tried-and-true list of must-have items for a successful beach day at LBI or your favorite beach.

Essential Gear for a Smooth Beach Day

  1. Beach Cart: We use the Rio Beach Wonder Wheeler Deluxe Utility Cart. It's foldable, making it easy to travel with, and perfect for transporting beach chairs, a collapsible cooler, umbrellas, beach toys, and more. Once on the sand, tilt it onto the large back wheels to pull it easily. This cart is a lifesaver, especially when you have multiple children and a lot of gear.

  2. Collapsible Cooler: The size depends on your stay and needs, but a collapsible cooler is essential for keeping drinks and snacks cool throughout the day. Opt for a cooler with multiple compartments to separate drinks, snacks, and baby food.

  3. Beach Umbrellas: Essential for shade and setting up a comfortable area for the family. Look for umbrellas with UV protection and easy setup features.

  4. Beach Chairs: Choose lightweight, foldable chairs that are easy to carry and set up. We recommend chairs with adjustable positions and cup holders for added convenience.

  5. Hanging Organizer: We use the S&T Nursery Hanging Organizers attached to our beach umbrella. These organizers keep essentials like phones, wallets, sunblock, hats, towels, and baby powder within easy reach and out of the sun. It’s a great way to stay organized and ensure nothing gets lost in the sand.

  6. Baby Powder & Sand-Wipe-Off-Mitt: A sand-wipe-off-mitt is a lifesaver for removing sand quickly, especially when changing diapers on the beach. Baby powder helps with sticky, wet sand. These items are compact but incredibly effective in keeping your kids clean and comfortable.

  7. Baby Wipes: Always essential for quick clean-ups, and wipes and ofc ourse diaper changes. Pack an extra supply to ensure you don’t run out.

For Beaching It with Infants/Kids Who Can't Walk Yet

  1. Baby Carrier: Wearing babies in a carrier keeps your hands free and makes moving around easier. Look for carriers with breathable fabric to keep both you and the baby cool.

  2. Beach Pop-Up Pack 'n Play or Tent: For our twins, we use the Baby Delight Go with Me Duo Deluxe Portable Chair and a lightweight pop-up beach tent. The tent provides shade and a safe space for naps. We used to use the POP 'N GO Baby Playpen for our older kids, which has a side opening for easy access and a cover to protect from the sun.

Making the Most of Your Beach Time

Once we get to the spot we want on the beach, we set up our chairs and beach umbrellas. I attach hanging cubby organizers to the inside of the beach umbrella to have easy access to things we need.

S&T Nursery Hanging Organizers

  • Top Cubbies: Phones, wallets, and other valuables.

  • Middle Cubbies: Sunblock and baby powder.

  • Bottom Cubbies: Hats, bathing suit cover-ups, and towels.

Additional Tips for a Stress-Free Beach Day

  1. Arrive Early: Getting to the beach early ensures you get a good spot and can set up without the crowds.

  2. Apply Sunblock at Home: Applying sunblock before you leave the house ensures it has time to absorb and provides better protection.

  3. Pack Extra Towels: You can never have too many towels. They’re useful for drying off, sitting on, and even as makeshift blankets.

  4. Bring Entertainment: Pack a few beach toys, books, or games to keep the kids entertained when they’re not in the water.

  5. Stay Flexible: Be prepared to adjust your plans based on the kids’ moods and needs. A flexible attitude makes for a more enjoyable day for everyone.

By organizing and bringing the right items, our beach days at LBI are enjoyable and stress-free, even with small kids in tow. LBI’s combination of natural beauty, family-friendly activities, and charming local culture makes it a perfect destination for families looking to create magical memories. So pack up, head to the Jersey Shore, and discover the magic of Long Beach Island with your family!
