Where the Journey Begins: Arriving in Calgary for Your Adventures by Disney Canadian Rockies Tour

The Adventures by Disney Canadian Rockies tour begins in Calgary—a city that’s often overlooked but absolutely worth exploring. From there, the itinerary winds through Banff, Lake Louise, and some of Alberta’s most breathtaking scenery. This post covers what to expect on Day 1: flying into Calgary, where to stay, and what to do in Calgary before your tour officially begins.

This post is all about the start of that journey: what it’s like to arrive in Calgary, get settled, and soak in the excitement before the official tour begins.

Why We Flew in Early (and Why You Should Too)

Our Adventures by Disney Canadian Rockies tour officially began in Calgary—but with limited direct flight options from New York, we made the call to arrive a day early. And we’re so glad we did. It gave us time to get settled, explore Calgary, and ease into the start of the trip without any stress.

If you’re planning this adventure, we highly recommend flying in early. Not only does it give you a buffer for any travel delays, but it also lets you experience more of Calgary’s local culture, food scene, and history before the group activities begin.

Booking Flights to Calgary: What You Need to Know (Especially if You’re Coming from the U.S.)

Flying WestJet from JFK to Calgary—no frills, but smooth and on time

Calgary isn’t the easiest city to reach via nonstop flights—especially if you’re coming from the East Coast. We flew WestJet from JFK through a Delta codeshare, and while it got us there on time, it was definitely a no-frills experience.

Here’s what we wish we knew ahead of time:

  • No in-seat entertainment, so download shows ahead of time.
  • Snacks are limited, so pack your own.
  • Seats were basic but comfortable, and the crew was kind and helpful.

WestJet runs smoothly, but go in with the right expectations. If you’re debating between arriving the day of or a day early—this is one of those trips where the extra day is worth every penny.

What to Pack for Your Arrival Day in Calgary

When you’re flying into Calgary to start your Adventures by Disney Canadian Rockies tour, a little strategic packing goes a long way. This isn’t a trip where you want to be digging through big luggage just to find a sweatshirt or sunscreen.

Here’s what we packed in our carry-ons to make Day 1 feel smooth, cozy, and vacation-ready:

  • Layers (it can be warm in the sun and cool in the shade)
  • Refillable water bottles
  • Snacks for the flight and arrival
  • Travel pillow or eye mask for longer flights
  • Printed confirmations and passports (always!)
  • A small crossbody or daypack to use throughout the trip

If you’re wondering what to bring beyond Day 1—especially for mountain weather, unpredictable temps, and active excursions—don’t miss our Ultimate Packing Guide for an Unforgettable Mountain Vacation. It covers everything from trail-ready shoes to cozy layers and Disney-style essentials.

Once we landed, Adventures by Disney magic kicked in. We were greeted by a friendly driver holding an ABD sign and whisked away in a private luxury SUV. No waiting, no stress—just a warm welcome and smooth start to the adventure.

Our destination: the Fairmont Palliser, a historic downtown hotel that perfectly balances old-world elegance with modern comfort.

Staying at the Fairmont Palliser: Classic Luxury in the Heart of Calgary

Checking in at the grand Fairmont Palliser, our first hotel of the tour.

The Fairmont Palliser has been welcoming travelers since 1914. Its grand architecture and Beaux-Arts charm make you feel like you’ve stepped back in time—but the service and amenities are thoroughly modern.

Our initial room was a bit tight for three adults, but the staff was quick to accommodate us in a larger room that felt spacious and luxurious. The service here was exceptional—gracious, helpful, and so warm.

Hotel Highlights:

  • Elegant rooms with classic decor and updated features
  • A beautiful indoor pool and fitness center
  • Full-service spa
  • The Oak Room Lounge for cocktails and light bites
  • On-site fine dining at the Rimrock Restaurant

If you arrive early, we recommend enjoying a leisurely breakfast or lunch at the hotel before setting off to explore the city.

Why We Loved Staying at the Fairmont Palliser Calgary

If you’re searching for a hotel in downtown Calgary with historic charm, timeless beauty, and modern comfort, the Fairmont Palliser Calgary is hard to beat. This iconic hotel has been welcoming guests since 1914 and is part of the legendary Fairmont collection—so staying here felt like checking off a classic from our hotel bucket list. From the grand lobby to the rich architectural details, it blends old-world elegance with the kind of thoughtful service that makes you feel like royalty (even in hiking boots).

As the first hotel on our Adventures by Disney Canadian Rockies tour, it set the tone with luxury, location, and a sense of arrival we won’t forget.

What to Do in Calgary Before Your Adventures by Disney Tour Begins

With nearly a full day before our Adventures by Disney Canadian Rockies itinerary officially kicked off, we had the chance to explore Calgary—and it was the perfect way to ease into the trip. If you’re planning to arrive early (which we highly recommend), here are some Calgary travel tips to help you make the most of it.

Stick to walkable neighborhoods like downtown and Stephen Avenue, where you’ll find outdoor patios, boutique shopping, art installations, and a surprisingly vibrant food scene. Don’t miss a local coffee shop, and keep an eye out for cowboy hats—Calgary’s western roots are alive and well.

If you’re up for a little adventure, Canada Olympic Park is just 20 minutes from downtown and offers summer activities like downhill karting, zip-lining, and mountain biking. It’s an easy Uber ride and a fun, active way to kick off your trip—especially if you’re traveling with teens or adventurous adults.

One of our favorite parts of this bonus day? Having time to decompress, soak in the local culture, and not feel rushed heading into the tour. Add in a stay at the Fairmont Palliser Calgary and you’re starting your Disney Canadian Rockies tour on a high note.

1. Olympic Park & Downhill Karting

Three karts, four rides each, and a lot of belly laughs. One of our favorite moments from Calgary.
This isn’t your average go-kart course—Canada Olympic Park is full of thrilling hills and stunning views!
Fast, scenic, and unexpectedly hilarious—yes, this downhill karting track is really worth it.

We grabbed an Uber to Canada Olympic Park, the legacy site of the 1988 Winter Olympics. Just 20 minutes from the Fairmont Palliser Calgary, it’s an easy half-day outing—and one we’d absolutely recommend if you’re arriving early for your Adventures by Disney Canadian Rockies tour.

In the summer, this spot transforms into a thrill-seeker’s playground with mountain biking, zip-lining, and our pick: downhill karting.

Karting had caught our eye while researching what to do in Calgary, and it turned out to be even more fun than it looked online. The track was smooth, fast, and surprisingly scenic, winding through the hillside with sweeping mountain views. It’s beginner-friendly, safe for all ages, and somehow both relaxing and adrenaline-packed. We saw parents riding with little kids, teens flying solo, and grandparents cracking up through the curves.

We went all in on a 12-ride package (4 rides each), and it was totally worth it. If you want to start your trip on a high note—with big laughs, a little speed, and a great memory—this is a Calgary activity we’d wholeheartedly recommend.

2. Exploring Stephen Avenue: Culture, Coffee & Calgary Vibes

Stephen Avenue in downtown Calgary is the perfect place to explore on your own before the Adventures by Disney tour officially begins—full of charm, shops, and western flair.

After karting, we headed to Stephen Avenue, a historic pedestrian street just steps from the Fairmont Palliser Calgary. If you only have a few hours to spare before your Adventures by Disney Canadian Rockies tour officially begins, this is where we’d tell you to go. It’s the kind of place that makes you feel like you’ve landed in the heart of something—part city, part small-town charm, and all personality.

We wandered through beautifully preserved buildings, window-shopped Western wear (yes, real Stetsons), and saw early signs of Calgary Stampede prep happening right in the middle of downtown. Cafés were buzzing with locals, street performers added a soundtrack to our stroll, and the whole street felt festive without being overly touristy.

It’s also easy and walkable—no itinerary needed. Grab a coffee, take your time, and soak in the energy of a city that’s often treated as a jumping-off point but is absolutely worth exploring.

If you’re looking for low-stress, high-reward Calgary travel tips, we’d say: stay central, wear comfy shoes, and give yourself time to slow down here. A few hours on Stephen Avenue was all it took to feel like the trip had already begun.

Checking In with Adventures by Disney

Check-in magic begins: Every family had personal time with the guides to preview the itinerary and ask questions.

That afternoon, the official Adventures by Disney tour began. Each travel group was given one-on-one time with the guides to go over the itinerary, ask questions, and pre-select meal preferences for key dining moments throughout the trip. It was also a chance to flag any allergies, mobility concerns, or special requests—something Disney handles with impressive care and discretion. We received our welcome packet, which included a printed itinerary, name tags, and a few ABD surprises to kick things off.

Our group felt excited, a little nervous, and full of energy as we headed into our welcome dinner. This is where we started making friends we’d end up truly bonding with throughout the trip.

Welcome Dinner & White Hat Ceremony

Hosted inside one of the Fairmont’s elegant ballrooms, our welcome dinner set the tone for the week. The buffet was thoughtful and satisfying—not overly fussy, but full of choices for all tastes.

What made it unforgettable, though, was Calgary’s White Hat Ceremony. A local rep shared the history behind the tradition, and each of us received our own white Stetson. It was a moment that felt part-welcome, part-transformation—a cowboy hat as your first Disney souvenir in Alberta.

The White Hat Ceremony is Calgary’s signature welcome—and it marked the official start of our Adventures by Disney Canadian Rockies experience. The hats, the history, and the heartfelt hospitality made it a moment we’ll never forget.
